The New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) has released its October application schedule for civil service exams.

Open, competitive, computer-based tests are administered throughout each month for various positions. If you meet the basic requirements of the job, you can apply for your exam online at Online Application System (OASys) or at one of the Computer-Based Testing and Application Centers (CTAC).

This month’s application period opened Oct. 9 for the following positions: call center representative; computer associate (software) (NYC H+H); computer associate (technical support); computer associate (technical support) (NYC H+H); customer information representative; emergency medical specialist-EMT (fire); emergency medical specialist trainee; occupational therapist (DOE); physical therapist (DOE); public health adviser; public health adviser (school health); public health assistant (school health); public health educator; public health nurse (school health); recreation supervisor.

The starting salary for each career varies, according to the city.

Most exams have a deadline of Oct. 29. Applications for call center representative, emergency medical specialist-EMT (fire), and emergency medical specialist trainee have an extended deadline through Nov. 26.

New York City employs hundreds of thousands of people in its 80 agencies. Taking a test is the way to get started in the hiring process for most of these positions. Application fees range from $40 to $101.

On Staten Island, the testing center is located at 135 Canal St., Stapleton. Additional testing centers are located at: 2 Lafayette St., Manhattan; 210 Joralemon St., Brooklyn; 118-35 Queens Blvd., Queens; 1932 Arthur Ave., the Bronx.

After an exam is administered, it generally takes nine to 12 months for an eligible list of passers to be established from which agencies can hire, according to DCAS.
