Texas high school students can now see which state universities will admit them based on their academic information prior to submitting an application, state officials announced Friday.

The Direct Admissions initiative — which has 31 university participants, including UT — is designed to “streamline” the college application process, according to a press release. It is the newest tool developed by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and works in conjunction with My Texas Future, the state’s college and career advising website, and ApplyTexas, an online application system for Texas universities.

“With the launch of Direct Admissions, the college application process will be made easier for young students and their families to choose the best Texas college or university for them to lead successful lives in our state,” Gov. Greg Abbott said in the press release. “Working together, we will continue to develop a college admissions process that is more efficient and effective for all Texas students and create a brighter future for our great state.”

Sarah Keyton, interim commissioner of higher education, said in the press release the state recognizes college admissions can be a challenging process for students.

“The impact of that is real, with some students hesitating to even apply,” Keyton said. “Direct Admissions has the potential to reduce time, boost confidence and increase transparency, encouraging Texans who might not otherwise consider college to take the next step.”

Students who meet qualifications for admission according to Direct Admissions’ results must still complete an official application on ApplyTexas to verify their academic record. The traditional application process remains an option for any student who does not qualify for direct admission at an institution.

Direct Admissions is now available in My Texas Future.
